Spring is almost here and for many of us that means allergy season is upon us.
Eye allergies are evident through symptoms such as burning, itchy and red eyes.
Eye allergies can appear any time of the year depending on your location and type of allergy. Seasonal allergies are brought on by allergens in the air outside, including pollen, ragweed, and grass. Perennial allergies stay with us year round and have different perpetrators from pet dander to dust mites.
If you’re experiencing itchy eyes and other allergy symptoms, contact your optometrist for a professional diagnosis. Your optometrist will determine whether your symptoms are allergy related or if it is something else such as a stye or pink eye.
Other suggestions to relieve allergy symptoms include avoiding the cause. For example, try avoiding activities during windy days in the spring and summer; try to do yard work on a day after rainfall; consider leaving your shoes outside so you don’t track pollen into your home; if you like to hang your sheets and pillowcases outside, consider using your electric dryer on days when the pollen count seems like it would be high.
Contact Lenses and Allergies
Allergy symptoms can be irritating when you are a contact lens wearer. Here are some tips that will make allergy season easier for you:
Clean your contacts and always follow your optometrist’s recommended wear schedule.
Save reminders in your phone to replace your contact lenses on time!
Keep your lubricant drops handy, especially during pollen-heavy days. Always consult your optometrist for drops that are safe to use with your contact lenses.
Consider switching to daily contact lenses to reduce any allergy contaminants in your eyes.
